How To Do Topic Research For Your Online Courses

When I first started creating courses online I picked topics that I had some basic knowledge in and created courses based on those topics.

I didn’t do much research to see what was selling or what was popular which as I eventually found out was a huge mistake.

I kinda was just like “Let’s publish it, get it online, and see where it goes from there.”

Although this worked in a way because it forced me to get my courses online it also made me waste a lot of time creating courses that didn’t sell really well.

I wasted a lot of time publishing online courses without doing popular topic research.

I published a few courses that did okay, and I had some others that didn’t do so well.

What I learned from this is that if you have a good idea of what topic is selling and what courses are in demand you will have a way easier time selling your online course…

WAY EASIER, and ultimately you will make more money.

When I created my JavaScript for beginners course I did a lot of research and I made sure that before I started to even create the course I knew it was going to sell.

I researched the web development category and found out that JavaScript is the number one topic on Udemy.

When I went ahead and created my JavaScript basics course I knew it was going to do well because I already did the research for it ahead of time.

I was confident going into the course creation process that I would be well rewarded for my hard work, and because of this I created a high quality course on the topic of JavaScript.

That course brings me in an average of about $1000 in sales from Udemy organic traffic each month alone…

This is the power of doing topic research before you create your online courses, it’s really that important.

Things To Look For

Now let’s talk about how you can go about and do basic topic research for your online courses. Here are some tips that I have to share with you…

Look For Topics That Have Courses With High Enrollments

If you can find topics that have courses with a lot of students and reviews then you can be sure that topic is in high demand.

See a course with 20,000 students and 100+ reviews?

That a good sign!

This means that a lot of people are looking for courses revolving around this main topic and selling your own course in this niche will be a heck of a lot easier because people are already looking to buy.

If you manage to find multiple courses in a topic with high enrollments and reviews you are gold.

Look For Topics That Have A Decent Amount of Courses

My next tip is something that goes a little bit against the grain but if you notice that a particular topic has a lot of courses teaching it then that proves that a lot of people are buying courses on that topic as well.

Sure there will be more competition but there will also be more people searching for courses on that topic as well.

When you don’t have an existing audience to sell to this is a great opportunity for you to get new eyeballs in front of your course.

As time moves on your course will be better and rank better than other courses especially on websites like Udemy.

Don’t be afraid if there are other courses teaching your topic you can take advantage of this and borrow some of those existing buying students.

Don’t Worry About It Too Much

Don’t spend days, weeks, and months doing topic research. At the most spend maybe 1 day looking around, remember all you are really looking for is an audience that is already buying. 

Look at some of the categories on Udemy and pay attention to the best sellers list.

These are the topics and niches that are selling the most. This is how I came up with the idea of teaching a course on JavaScript, it was the top selling topic for web development.

I recommend that at the most you spend maybe 1-3 hours doing topic selection, especially if you are in the process of creating your very first online course.

The important thing is to get a course out there and make some sales so you can start growing your online business and making your dream a reality.

Although I wouldn’t put 100% of my faith in it, it’s great for brainstorming and validating course topics.

What’s Stopping You From Publishing Your First Online Course?

I don’t normally do heavy promotional blog posts or emails but today I want to talk about some of the most common problems that hold people back from publishing their very first online course which is imperative to success if you want to make a full time income working from home like I do.

How Do I Create The Content For An Online Course?

One of the biggest problems beginners face is not knowing how to create the content for an online course.

It can feel overwhelming to have to record video and put everything all together but I’m here to tell you that it’s not as hard as you might think.

There exists a lot of software on the web that really makes it easy to put together a video of your computer screen or an online power-point and then record your voice over it. In fact a lot of this software is even FREE as well which is super cool!

I use Open Source Broadcaster to record the vast majority of my video content for my courses and if I need to do any video editing (Which I rarely do) I’ll use Sony Vegas.

Creating the content for a course is not as hard as you think, don’t let it scare you.

How Do I Pick a Course Topic That I Know Will Sell?

Another very common question and a very important one. How do you know if you course topic will allow your product to sell well?

My solution is to look for other courses on the same topic and see if they are selling well.

Chances are if someone else created a MailChimp Email Marketing Course that is selling very well, there’s no reason why your course cannot do just as well.

What If I’m Not an “Expert”

One of the most common mental roadblocks that a lot of my students experience is thinking that they are not “good enough” or knowledgeable on their topic to create a course.

I’m living proof that you don’t need to be an expert to sell online courses.

I’m not an expert on anything I teach, which is why I generally teach beginner and basic types of courses.

All you need to know is more than the person you are teaching to sell them a paid product.

I Don’t Have a Blog or Audience To Sell My Course To

This is a legit problem and you will need traffic and you will need to learn how to build an audience if you want to make a full-time income teaching BUT you don’t need any of those things in order to get started selling online courses.

Udemy Review – Are Udemy Courses Worth Your Money, Time and Energy?

One of the hottest marketplaces for online courses that has been popping up all over the web lately has been Udemy.

In this blog post I’m going to do my best to help explain to you what exactly Udemy is and if it’s worth your time to invest both time and money into buying courses on this interesting online platform.

First let’s take a closer look at Udemy.

What is Udemy?

Udemy is an online platform that was first introduced to me via Google when I was searching for web developing tutorials a couple of years ago. I came across Rob Percival’s Complete Web Developing Course and since at this time I wanted to be a web developer I enrolled in the course and this is when I got to see first hand what Udemy had to offer.

A few web developing course purchases later and I was quite enjoying my time on the platform. The course quality in my experience did vary from course to course but overall for the price I was paying for these courses I couldn’t really go wrong.

I remember a friend of mine was enrolled in a multi-media program that he paid thousands of dollars for in College. By the end of his 2nd year he decided he wanted to be a web developer just like myself, and we were both at the same level. Only difference was he paid over $12,000 to get to where he was where I paid maybe $300-400 and that brings me to the first advantage of learning on Udemy.

Courses generally cost around $50-$200 but are regularly discounted on the platform from anywhere between $10-$50 dollars.

Although Udemy doesn’t do as many $10 promos as they used to they still regularly do them once every 1-2 months so that’s when I’d recommend you but the bulk of your courses on the platform. Nonetheless most courses you enroll in will earn you your money back in value or action regardless so it’s really up to you on how much you want to spend.

Who Should Enroll In Udemy Courses?

The next question you are probably asking yourself is who benefits the most from taking Udemy courses and is it really right for me? I personally think that everyone can benefit from Udemy courses because there is such a wide variety of topics covered on the platform.

My girlfriend who at one point in time was interested in running her own spa from home enrolled in a basics massage course and made her money back 10 times what she paid for it. This is also the same platform that I regularly take business courses on as well so there is most likely at least something for everyone, you just got to look.

I think the people who will really benefit from Udemy the most are people who can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on schooling when they just want to experiment with a certain career path.

For example, interested in being a freelance graphics designer? Take a course on Udemy for $50 bucks and try it out to see if you like it, if not then move onto something else. No more wasting a full year in school and thousands of dollars seeing if something is right for you.

For people who don’t have the money or simply refuse to pay the insane amounts of money that traditional schooling tries to charge you I think Udemy is the perfect alternative. I’ve even seen a personal trend towards online course consumption increasing more and more each year meaning that this type of learning is just going to become more and more popular, and for a good reason.

My Results With Udemy Courses

I’ve enrolled in some amazing Udemy courses and I’ve enrolled in some that weren’t the greatest but for the vast majority of them I usually end up walking away with at least something that I can use and apply to my business.

Recently I’ve enrolled in a Facebook ads course that shows you how to create lead ads. I didn’t know nothing about this prior so there definitely are courses out there that you can benefit from you just got to find what you are looking for.

If you are like me you will most likely not mind paying for content as long as it will help you get a result.

Udemy also let’s anyone become an instructor so if you have something to teach you can also earn some cash on the platform. In fact my total earnings on the platform is over $15,000 to this date.

  • Course Quality Can Vary Quite A Bit From Course To Course

Overall those are the positives in my own personal experience as well as the one con that I’ve experience using the platform. I’m pretty happy with what Udemy has to offer to students and it’s a great alternative for those who simply can’t spend large amounts for online courses.

How Andrea Made Her First $1000 After Only 3 Months

How I Made Over $15,000 Selling Online Courses Without a Blog

In the last lesson I shared with you the number one problem that all content creators and bloggers on the web struggle with the most.

Traffic…

Traffic is something we all need and the more targeted traffic we can get coming to our blogs, email funnels, and product pages the more money we will ultimately make.

Let me say that once again…

The more targeted traffic you can bring to your product the more sales you will generate.

The problem for a beginner like yourself is that it can take a long time to get the ball rolling. I don’t want you working your ass off for 6 months before you even start to see some money coming in.

I want you to start making money right away, possibly within your first few weeks and at the latest first month of working online.

When I published my first course on Udemy I didn’t have a blog or any kind of traffic going to my courses, they just sold on the platform all by themselves…

By month two I was making over $200 a month and then 6 months later I had my first $1000 month.

This is exceptionally fast when compared to traditional blogging or content marketing. This is why I recommend that the first product you create for your business is a Udemy course.

My Outline For Creating Online Courses That Sell

In this lesson I’m going to outline in a little bit more detail what I did to help sell my courses on Udemy and what I’d recommend you do if you were to start over and repeat the process I did from scratch.

Here is the process that I would recommend you take:

1. Try To Create At Least 1 Course Every 1-2 Months

The more courses you have on Udemy the better. Some courses will out-sell others and some will make less but in my experience the more courses you have the more potential money you can make.

Udemy allows you to do 2 promotional emails every month so you can use these to market your courses to your existing students. Students will also check out your other courses if they enroll in one of yours and have a positive experience.

I’ve noticed this to be true with even free enrollments or free courses. If people like your free content they will consume your paid content. This is fundamentally how content marketing and blogging works.

I regularly see the same student enroll in multiples of my courses simply because they like the way I teach.

If you can try to create 1 course every month you should be well on your way to making some good money on Udemy.

The Higher Your Course Is Ranked The Better It Sells

The higher up in rankings your course is the better it will sell. This is simply because more people will be exposed to your course.

Also since more people will be seeing your course the vast majority of them will be people who have bought Udemy courses in the past and will have a higher conversion rate.

Udemy also sends out promotional emails that directly promote courses that are ranked well and selling better than other courses.

You got a high quality course that sells well and has lots of students and reviews, than Udemy will let potential students know because these types of courses convert extremely well.

I got my courses ranked well on Udemy by giving away free coupons, getting lots of reviews,students and having high ratings for my courses.

These factors influence the ranking of your Udemy Courses.

You Can Use Udemy To Funnel Traffic To Your Online Platforms

Since a large portion of my 60,000 students on Udemy came from free coupons and free courses I needed some way to make good use out of all those potential email addresses.

Udemy doesn’t let you have your students email address but it does let you send 4 educational emails per month. I took advantage of this and started making YouTube videos and blog posts that were related to my course topics.

This is what allowed me to get over 3000 subscribers on my YouTube Channel and help boost views to my videos. This is something that every instructor on the platform should be doing but rarely do I ever see fellow instructors doing this at all.

Summary

To sum things up here is what I did that lead me to having success with Udemy and I reccomend you do the same:

  • Regularly create new courses on Udemy
  • Market your new courses to your existing students
  • Get as many students and reviews as possible to get eyeballs on your courses
  • Funnel all that free traffic back to your blog/ email list / social media platforms
  • Start selling your courses on your own blog

In a nutshell that’s what I did and that’s what I’d recommend you do as well.

Of course it isn’t that simple…

When I first started working online I did everything right to get my blog and business online.

I created my blog itself, set-up everything to work correctly, SEO optimized my blog, and started to write some truly amazing high quality blog posts for my readers to devour…

Unfortunately I was struggling really hard in the beginning to make any kind of money at all.

The reason why?

My blog wasn’t getting any traffic.

Without traffic to your blog or product you will simply not make any sales. I was writing blog posts and producing content to an audience that didn’t even exist at the time. When it comes to content creation it takes a long time before you start to see results from all the hard work you put in.

How I Solved My No Traffic Problem

Until I came across a solution that required me to not need any traffic at all (at least in the beginning).

Roughly two years ago I enrolled in an online web developing course off of Udemy (At the time I was learning web development and web design) while taking the course on Udemy I noticed that they were hiring instructors to teach online video courses on their platform.

I was intrigued by this so I read some reviews and did my research and it seemed that there were quite a few instructors making some decent money off of Udemy. I have a background in video editing  so for me this was very attractive and easy to do at the time.

Nowadays with the technology we have anyone can create an online course almost effortlessly with a little bit of proper guidance.

What happened after this?

Well I’ll tell you that 6 months later I was making a full-time income working from home selling courses online from both Udemy and my blog…

I used Udemy to solve my traffic problem, this same problem that every content creator faces.
